I grew up in Memphis, TN, and had always planned a career as a
high school foreign language teacher. I was also a very good math
student, and, in college at The University of Tennessee, I decided
to expand my teaching certification to include math. Just before
I graduated, I took a computer programming course and discovered
that it was both fun and mentally challenging. I then obtained a
Master's degree in Computer Science and went to work for a company
in Knoxville that automated manufacturing processes, particularly
in the food and drug industry. It was 1977.
In 1980 I went to work for a company in Louisville, KY, and later
that year I accepted a promotion to a software development position
in Atlanta, GA. For the next 14 years I worked in both management
and development of healthcare software. In 1994 one of my co-workers
convinced me to help her develop a graphical reporting application
for physicians' offices. We were marginally successful marketing
our product and completed several projects on a consulting basis.
In 1995 we sold our business to BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia
and stayed on as employees. In 1999 Medical Manager Corporation
bought our division, and WebMD later acquired Medical Manager.
Now I work from my home in Atlanta for a WebMD division based in
Alachua, FL, developing medical records applications, using Microsoft's
.Net technology. I feel so very lucky to have found a career for
which I'm extremely well-suited; I love analyzing and solving technical
problems. I also have schedule flexibility, talented peers, and
excellent compensation. What more can a woman ask for!
