I came to teaching late in my life and have only been teaching for 6 years. After graduating from college in the mid seventies, I worked as a quality control chemist in a coal lab on a job site where I was the only woman. This was during a time that there was little publicity involving sexual harassment. I did encounter small fractions of verbal harassment from some of my male colleagues but the majority was very supportive of me in this male dominated work environment. After working there for a couple of months, I found myself gaining the personal and intellectual respect from my colleagues and supervisors.

I have been a lucky female because I was able to have a fulfilling experience in both of the female worlds. After getting married and having children in the early 80's, I was able to be a stay at home mom for 12 years. It was during this time of child rearing that I began to give a serious look at education. As my children were getting older, I began to take the courses needed for teacher certification and began my teaching career as they began middle school.

I now feel as though I am on the 3rd voyage in my life. I recently finished my second masters with a concentration in chemistry and I feel as though I will teach at the high school level for the next 4 to 6 years. Science is my first love but working with middle school and high school students is a close 2nd. When I am able to see a student get fired up about something or decide to do something with their future that involves science, I get a great deal of joy knowing that I had a little impact on the life of someone else.

I don't feel as though my career in science will finish here in the classroom. I am not sure what my next adventure will be but I do know that it will involve science. I knew from the time that I was a small child that working in the field of science was what I wanted to do. Regardless of the experiences or barriers that I have faced, it was that love for understanding and learning science that has kept me focused.
