As a Project Designer for the Port Authority I am responsible
for completing capital programs within scope, schedule, and budget
as well as interfacing with consultants, contractors, and community
and government representatives. In other words I am involved in
transportation projects beginning with creating the project scope
through the design phase and finishing with construction. I am actively
involved in station renovation projects for Port Authority's existing
light rail transit system and busways.
Primarily I manage the services of design and construction management
consultants. I review drawings, specifications and contract provisions
making sure that they comply with Port Authority and outside agency
requirements during the design phase. During the construction phase
of the projects I review an participate in various construction
functions, such as field design changes, sequence of construction,
work procedures, safety provisions, cost and time estimates and
progress payments to name a few. There is also a lot of coordination,
which must occur between Port Authority divisions and staff.
The thing I like most about my position with Port Authority is the
variety that it has to offer. By being involved in all aspects of
the projects it leaves little time to fall into a rut.
Prior to working at Port Authority I have 15 years experience with
A/E (Architectural/Engineering) firms in the Pittsburgh area. I
worked on design projects specializing in transportation, micro
electronic, wastewater treatment, and pharmaceutical facilities
including both retrofit and Greenfield site projects. During this
time I was able to travel to the various project sites and work
in remote office locations. My travels were mostly in the United
States, but I was able to work on a project in Dublin, Ireland.
Early in my career I prepared construction and presentation documents
with the use of Cad.
I graduated from Pittsburgh Technical Institute with an Associates
in Specialized Technology Degree for Architectural Drafting and
Design. Throughout my career I have learned most from hands on experience.
I was fortunate to work for companies that encouraged growth and
presented me with every opportunity to learn and accomplish my goals.
They were willing to teach me how to find the solution instead of
just telling me the answer when I asked a question. I was like a
sponge for knowledge and I accepted any challenge presented to me.
I am married and have two sons in high school. In my free time I
enjoy gardening, cooking, traveling and spending time with family
and friends. I am also very active in the youth programs at my church.
I recommend a career in architecture. It has been exciting and challenging
and given me the opportunity to show my creativity.
