What are the guidelines for GEM-SET?

GENERAL GUIDELINES for ALL PARTICIPANTS
1) All e-mail contributions to the GEM-SET digest will be sent to GEM-SET@uic.edu. Each participant is asked to contribute either a question, response, or announcement to the digest at least one time each month.
2) List manager will remove all individual e-mail addresses and last names of students to protect privacy.
3) Students and mentors will receive a digest of messages that is open dialogue for all GEM-SET participants. This digest is sent directly to your e-mail address and is also available on the GEM-SET web pages in the archive section.
4) All participants are encouraged to check the web page to see biographies of mentors and learn about scholarship opportunities and field trips in science, engineering, and technology.
5) Each participant is asked to join GEM-SET for one year with an option to continue. All participation is voluntary and there is no penalty if you decide to drop out of GEM-SET.
6) There is no fee to participate in GEM-SET.

STUDENT GUIDELINES
1) Most students are female, ages 13-18. Boys are also able to join, but our target group is female because that is the focus of the Women in Science and Engineering program.
2) Students must have a direct affiliation with a sponsoring organization such as their school science club, a Boys and Girls Club, or the YWCA.
3) Students must commit to reading the Digest at least once per week and sending a message at least once per month.
4) Students must be willing to connect via e-mail with science, engineering, and technology mentors. All questions about education and career decisions, peer pressure and concerns about classes, challenges, and future opportunities are welcome.
5) Students should refrain from asking questions related to homework assignments. Our mentors are here to provide guidance and advice from a trusted resource. We trust you to do your own homework!

SPONSORING ORGANIZATION GUIDELINES
(Examples of sponsoring organizations are school science clubs, YWCA, or Girl Scout Councils)

1) Sponsoring organizations must have a commitment to expanding the opportunities for young women and girls in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.
2) Sponsoring organizations must provide weekly access to e-mail for the student participants (if not available at home) and encourage participation in GEM-SET Digest dialogue and regional mentoring events.
3) Sponsoring organization should be able to recruit at least five student representatives from their organization to participate in GEM-SET.
4) Sponsoring organization is responsible for making sure that each student submits an application..

MENTOR GUIDELINES
1) Mentors will be women in science, engineering, or technology careers and must show a commitment to expanding the opportunities for young women and girls in non-traditional fields.
2) Mentors will provide a brief biography to be included on the GEM-SET web site.
3) Mentors must be willing to check GEM-SET Digests for questions and comments that may match their field of expertise. Mentors should be willing to provide feedback when topics touch upon their area of expertise or when special insight from life experience is applicable.
4) Mentors should not promote specific companies or initiatives that reflect a potential conflict of interest. All mentoring should highlight the benefits of non-traditional careers in general.
5) Mentors should expect to read the Digests at least once per week and comment once per month.
