GEM-SET Daily Digest for September 16, 2002 - September 20, 2002
Dear GEM-SET Participants,
The Girls E-Mentoring in Science, Engineering and Technology (GEM-SET)
project is scheduled to come to a close on September 25, 2002. We
want to thank all 500 participants (400+ students, partners, and
100+ mentors) for being a part of this exciting program to encourage
young women to explore careers in science, engineering, and technology.
The preliminary results about the program from the evaluation many
of you completed earlier in May are now available. The initial evaluation
indicates the following:
29% of the GEM-SET mentees are "extremely likely" to apply
to SET programs in college and 31% of the
GEM-SET mentees are "extremely likely" to pursue a career
in SET fields. GEM-SET mentors are employed at more than 100 corporate,
academic, and non-profit institutions across country. Each mentor
volunteers her time to help answer Daily Digest questions about
SET topics and careers. We thank each and every mentor for being
a role model and offering expert advice on questions ranging from
college applications to day-to-day life in a male-dominated career.
We also want to thank all the girls for your participation in GEM-SET.
You have asked good questions and explored many different aspects
of science, engineering, and technology. The enthusiasm from all
of you has been inspiring and encouraging for all of us involved
in the program. We are pleased to announce that because of your
commitment and support in making this program a great success, the
Womens Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor is extending and expanding
the Girls E-mentoring Program. Beginning October 1, 2002, GEM-SET
II will include girls and mentors from all ten Womens Bureau regions
across the nation. GEM-SET II will continue through
September, 2003. We have taken many of your recommendations for
the current program to improve GEM-SET II.For example, more networking
opportunities will be available to mentors via an on-line bulletin
board and chat room. Students will have an opportunity to be part
of a national, on-line community that can help answer those tough
questions about how to get into college, how to advance in science/
engineering/technology classes, and how to find the major that will
be rewarding in the school-to-career transition. In addition, the
quiz-of-the-week contest will continue as mentees are challenged
to think about tough SET issues. We would like to know from all
participants --students, mentors and partners-- whether you plan
to continue with the expanded GEM-SET II program. Please reply to
this e-mail if you would like to continue with GEM-SET II and remain
on the Daily Digest list. Reply by hitting your e-mail reply feature
and type "Continue with GEM-SET II" in the subject line
of your message. IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND BY OCTOBER 1, 2002, YOUR
E-MAIL WILL BE REMOVED. (Note: a consent form will be sent via U.S.
mail to all participants who indicate they wish to continue so don't
forget to send your most current mailing address with zip code when
you reply.) Thank you again for your participation! We hope that
the Girls E-Mentoring in Science, Engineering, and Technology Project
has been and will continue to be a valuable experience for you.
Don't forget to reply by October 1st!
Sincerely,
Women's Bureau Regional Administrators for the GEM-SET Program
Jacqueline Cooke, RA, Region I, (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont)
Cornelia Moore, RA, Region III (Delaware, District of Columbia,
Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia)
