WELCOME TO THE GEM-SET PROGRAM!
The staff at the UIC Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program
would like to extend our warm welcome to everyone participating
in the Girls' E-Mentoring in Science, Engineering & Technology
(GEM-SET). You are invited to explore the GEM-SET web page at http://www.gem-set.org
to learn more about the many mentors, students, and partners who
make this mentoring program successful. The Digest is the forum
where questions and responses are exchanged.
The mentoring program is unique because mentors and mentees are
not matched one-on-one. We use a group mentoring system. Here is
how it works:
STEP 1: Students send in career questions and comments to GEM-SET@uic.edu.
Guidelines for discussion include classroom issues, career decisions,
peer-pressure, challenges and opportunities. Scholarships, internships,
prizes and field trips are also posted on the Digest.
STEP 2: All questions are automatically posted on the GEM-SET Digest
for ALL the participants to read and respond. Mentors and students
can respond by hitting the message REPLY button or by sending your
message to GEM-SET@uic.edu.
STEP 3: When someone responds to a question, the reply is posted
on the Daily Digest with a hot link for you to click on to read
the answers. Both mentors and students are invited to make comments.
Usually responses are made within 10 days of the initial posting.
The Digest will be posted at least once each week, more often if
it is busy. Participants are asked to read it once each week and
send in a question or response one time each month. If you have
questions about how the program works or if you have trouble with
accessing the Daily Digest, there is help available by sending your
problem to GEM-SET@uic.edu or calling the GEM-SET staff at (312)413-1924.
Thank you for being part of the GEM-SET project. We hope you find
this experience rewarding and find answers to all your career questions!
Sincerely,
Sarah H. Shirk, MPH
