Date : September 18 - 19, 2003

Location:

    University of Illinois at Chicago
Department of Civil & Materials Engineering
    842 W Taylor St.
    Chicago, IL - 60607
    USA

Objectives

The objectives of the workshop are:
  • To summarize the current state-of-the art and the state-of-practice of geoenvironmental engineering
  • To identify the specific roles that geoenvironmental engineers play
  • To identify gaps in knowledge about the current geoenvironmental environmental systems
  • To explore how emerging technologies such as sensor technologies, nanotechnologies and information technologies may be utilized for geoenvironmental systems
  • To identify and prioritize research needs in geoenvironmental systems
  • To identify geoenvironmental educational needs
  • To facilitate collaboration among researchers and practicing engineers

Workshop Structure

In order to cover a broad range of geoenvironmental engineering issues, the participants will be divided into the following three technical committees:
Committee 1: Waste Cintainment Design & Performance
Committee 2: Contaminated Site Assesment & Remediation
Committee 3: Waste and Recycled Material Charaterization & Applications

Each committee will consist of at least 10 members who will be identified based on their experience and interest. All of the participants must submit a white paper on current state as well as research and educational needs of geoenvironmental engineering. Please see Paper Submission for details and guidelines. All of these papers will be made available electronically to all the participants.

The workshop will be held for two days, with the first day presentations reflecting the stat-of-practice, state-of-education and the state-of-the-art. During the second day morning, individual committees will meet and identify the research and educational needs. Following these individual meetings, all the participants will be convened to discuss suggestions and recommendations of each committee.
