The Advocacy and Empowerment (A&E) for Minorities with Disabilities Program looks at the growing needs of African-Americans and Latinos with disabilities. A&E houses the new Center for Capacity Building on Minorities with Disabilities Research (CCBMDR) which develops services to help people from different cultures. Also, the Center examines the impact disability services have on minorities.

Assistive Technology Unit (ATU) designs special technology to help people with disabilities be more independent. The ATU can work with a person at their home or worksite to make the space better for that person to live and work in. These technologies can include augmentative communication devices, computers, and wheelchairs.

Center on Epidemiology & Demography of Disability is a collection of research projects that looks at how disability is defined and how many people have disabilities across Illinois, the U.S. and in other countries. They use state and national data systems. This data helps with planning and making policies.

The Chicago Center for Disability Research (CCDR) focuses on researching the life experience of people with disabilities. Projects are selected in response to needs expressed by people living with disabilities in the community and are supervised by qualified professionals with personal disability experience.
The Community Support Program focuses on ways to improve the community for people with disabilities. This program provides support to meet the needs of the disability community throughout Illinois.

The Disability & Cultural Studies Unit does research on the history, culture, and art of disability. This unit looks at how people with disabilities are viewed and treated in books, movies, and art. The unit has made films about disability that have won international awards and is now co-editing an encyclopedia of disability.

The Family Clinic serves children adolescents, and adults with disabilities. The program identifies developmental delays and when appropriate refers families to early intervention and other community services. The Clinic works with many Hispanic families and has staff who speaks Spanish. Services include hearing evaluations, medical evaluations, OT evaluations, psychological and psychosocial evaluations, and speech/language evaluations. The clinic also offers social skills groups, individual and group therapy, and parent training. Clinic staff often present on topics such as autism, developmental problems, and dual diagnosis to families, service providers, and professionals.

DBTAC: Great Lakes ADA Center provides information, materials, technical assistance and training on the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ( ADA ). Topics addressed includes the non-discrimination requirements in employment, the obligations of state and local governments and business to ensure that programs, services and activities are readily accessible to and useable by people with disabilities. This includes access to the information technology used by these entities including but not limited to websites, software, kiosks, etc.

The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) is an information center on physical activity and disability. NCPAD promotes the positive health benefits that EVERY body can get from exercise. Their website contain information on different sports and activities for persons with disabilities. Also, videos can be downloaded that show how to do certain exercises.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Recreational Technologies (RERC Rec-Tech) at University of Illinois-Chicago is a five-year grant funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) of the US Department of Education. The primary mission of the RERC Rec-Tech is to expand new knowledge and research on recreation
and exercise
technology for people with disabilities, and to disseminate technology development through education, training and collaboration with private sectors.

The Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities (RRTC/ADD) promotes the healthy aging of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in response to physical, cognitive, and environmental changes. They focus on planning for the future as adults age. The RRTC/ADD also works with siblings (brothers and sisters) of people with disabilities. They have a collection of research and resources for advocates on their website.
