2006

Carlos Drazen, M.A., received the Ann and Edward Page-El Scholarship Award for 2006. The scholarship supports educational opportunities for graduate students, residents, or fellows interested in social or medical aspects of neurological disabilities.

Michael Grice received the Arc of Illinois Life Acchievemnt Award.

Eynat Shevil, a student in the Disability Studies Program, has been awarded a University Fellowship for the upcoming academic year.

John Kramer, PhD student in Disability Studies, received a UIC Provost’s Award for 2006.

Carol J. Gill, Ph.D., was notified of her selection for the Daring To Dream Scholarship Award, an award given by the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, University of Maine, to acknowledge exemplary scholarship in disability studies.

Glenn T. Fujiura, Ph.D., received the Arc of Illinois’ Leadership Award at it’s annual conference held April 4th and 5th. Dr. Fujiura was selected as “one whose contributions have significantly impacted the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. His leadership efforts have inspired others and influenced positive change.”

 

2005
Glenn Fujiura, PhD, received the Multicultural Council Award for Leadership in Diversity by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). This award is presented in recognition of exhibited leadership and commitment to advancing programs and practices that increase the diversity, cultural and/or linguistic competencies within a Center and the Network as a whole. The award also recognizes the significant contributions made in furthering understanding of the diverse needs of families seeking disability services.

Sharon Snyder, PhD, the director of two documentary films in disability arts, took home awards from the Second International Moscow Disability Film Festival held November 11-14, 2004. Self-Preservation: the Art of Riva Lehrer and Disability Takes on the Arts, both won as best films in the category of Disability Culture and Arts. Her work competed with 160 films from 16 countries that had been accepted into the competition. David Mitchell, PhD, served as the editor for both films.

Glenn Hedman, PE, ATP, RET, Director of the Assistive Technology Unit, has been elected as President-Elect of the Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). RESNA is an interdisciplinary organization of professionals interested in technology and disability.

In 2004, The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) was honored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, with their Best Effective Practices Award.

Carol Gill, PhD, has been elected as one of the inductees to UIC’s Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Phi Kappa Phi recognize and encourages superior scholarship and “also brings together the best scholars of all disciplines to foster mutual respect and cooperation to the benefit of all.” Faculty members must have achieved noteworthy distinction in their fields to be eligible for election.

Ann Cameron Williams, PhD, received the Anne Rudigier award, named for Ms. Anne Rudigier, a young women who demonstrated that one individual's commitment, energy, love of life, and respect for all people can be shared and can persevere through others. The Award is presented by the Rudigier Family in loving memory of their daughter Anne and of the values she held in her work.

Masters student Pamela Molina Toleda received two international advocacy awards, the Columbia Award Prize of Honorary Latin American and the Chilean “Citizenship 2005 Prize.”

Valerie Robinson received the 2005-2006 UIC Award of Merit, a campus-wide honor which recognizes academic professional and support staff employees who have demonstrated excellence.
