Deadline 1: 4th International Symposium on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders in the Middle Easthttp://www.worldeventsforum.com/alzsymposium/abstracts.htm The International Symposium on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders in the Middle East, developed in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Disease International, aims: to focus attention on dementia and neurodegenerative disorders of the aged in the Middle East to raise scientific, medical and social awareness of these disorders to enhance communication amongst medical and scientific workers in the region. Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses have received relatively little attention in the region of the Middle East, an area with a population of over 225 million people. Recent work has demonstrated important geographical variations in the occurrence of AD, with studies showing low incidence and prevalence of the disease in Ballarbgarh, India and Ibadan, Nigeria, with high prevalence and incidence in African Americans and Hispanics in the USA. A recent report has found high AD prevalence, despite low apolipoprotein E e4 allele frequency, in Palestinian Arabs residing in Wadi Ara, in northern Israel. There have been few epidemiological studies of dementia performed in the Middle East. The progressive aging of Middle Eastern populations supports the importance of dementia studies in the region. In April 2001, a meeting endorsed by the World Federation of Neurology, Alzheimer's Disease International and the Pancyprian Association of Alzheimer's Disease was held in Cyprus to bring together workers concerned with the medical and social aspects of AD. Participants were from Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, The Palestinian Authority, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA, and Yugoslavia. Editor: Itiel Dror (http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~id) Learning technologies have been taking an increasing role in almost all learning environments. They are used in a variety of informal and formal educational environments, from early years to university level and throughout adulthood, as well as in many commercial, industrial, and governmental settings. With the greater use of learning technologies it is critical to better understand how they interact with human cognition. Both in terms of how they may facilitate and enhance (as well as hinder) learning, and also in terms of how they affect the way we learn and acquire information, and the nature of cognition.
These issues pertain to specific technologies and to learning objectives. Specific technologies (and their usage) are important to understand in their own right; for example, how the use of electronic boards and visualization tools, e-learning, synchronic vs. a-synchronic remote learning, blackboard, simulation, virtual realities, and other technological learning environments affect learning and the learner. But also the learning technologies need to be considered and understood in light of learning objectives: not only the acquisition of information, but also the ability to retain and use it and the assessment of the effectiveness of the learning process. When considering how best to use learning technologies (and their vulnerabilities) one needs to be able to determine which learning materials and objectives are best suited for these technologies, which learning tools are most appropriate, and how to best use them. Furthermore, a fundamental issue to address is if and when learning technologies should replace traditional learning and when and how should learning technologies be blended with traditional learning.
Original and high quality papers that examine learning technologies either from an academic or from a practical perspective will be considered for publication. The first special issue of Pragmatics & Cognition devoted to Cognitive Technologies is now going to be published as a book. It is hoped that the Learning Technologies special issue will also appear in book form in the future.

Giorgio Agamben's concept of bare life, embodied in the figure of homo sacer, as the life that can be killed without the commission of a crime - is frequently cited in contemporary accounts of the politically excluded - the refugee, the interned at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay. Yet his argument is founded upon an analysis of the collusion of biomedical discourse with the biopolitical imperatives of the modern state, citing the euthanasia programmes of disabled people in pre-war Germany as an exemplary instance of the production of bare lives. Those deemed to be cognitively impaired (although this term is itself subject to debate) often fall outside received definitions of the human. Theoretical models that assume certain fundamental attributes, for instance, full participation in a language community, the capacity to engage in rational discourse, or particular forms of self-awareness, implicitly exclude people without those cognitive abilities. Equally, discourses of 'access' and 'visibility' with their emphasis upon physicality may be inadequate to the task of addressing forms of cognitive difference. This special issue of JLD asks scholars to consider the problems - political, ethical and aesthetic - at stake in literary representations of cognitive impairment. The issue will include articles that explore literary works, as well as those that consider and critique contemporary theoretical models. The issue will be edited by Dr. Lucy Burke and Dr. David Bolt. The deadline for manuscripts is not until 1 September 2007, but you are urged to send your proposal to David as soon as possible: To find out more about submitting an article to JLD, visit: Deadline 7: Anxiety and Comorbid Disorders, Understanding Risk, Optimizing Outcomes 28th Annual Conferencehttp://www.adaa.org/conference&events/2008/2008%20Short%20call.pdf On behalf of the 2008 Conference Committee, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America is pleased to announce the Call for Papers. Essays in Philosophy is planning an issue on the Philosophy of Disability, to be published in January 2008. If you or a colleague is interested in this topic, please see the Editor's Note for this issue, below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. From the main journal web page, there are links to submission guidelines as well as other sites. http://www.humboldt.edu/~essays/. a.. Submission deadline: 1 October 2007 b.. Editor's Note for Vol. 9, No. 1: Disability Studies is a growing research area for scholars, producing literature relevant to nearly all specializations within philosophy. Disability theory asks us to challenge our assumptions in medical ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, hermeneutics, and pedagogy. This issue of Essays in Philosophy is concerned with the philosophy of disability, bearing in mind that "disability" can be unpacked to include a variety of cognitive and physical states of being. Submissions are encouraged from a broadly construed understanding of this topic. For example: a.. In what ways does disability theory's critique of "normalcy" problematize current issues in medical ethics and eugenics? b.. How do the arguments for disabled persons' rights and legal recognition challenge social and political philosophy's traditional assumptions about identities and personhood? c.. Does the work of disabled artists ask us to revise how we conceptualize art-making? d.. When an artist chooses a disabled person as a subject, how does this ask us to rethink traditional ideas of beauty, transcendence, the sublime ( i.e., Alison Lapper's sculpture in Trafalgar Square)? e.. How does the participation and performance of disabled athletes shed new light on ethics and sport? (Special Olympics, performance with and/or without enhancements/modifications/augmentation/prosthetics) f.. When teachers have disabled students, to what extent should they change their pedagogy and classroom methodologies? g.. In light of the increased use of technologies in and out of class, especially those used by disabled students (WebCT, Blackboard, Powerpoint, Email) how are we to engage in mediated communication, to positive and/or negative ends? h.. How can our 21st century understanding of disability and genetics be used to revise or critique the received view of the history of philosophy and epistemology? i.. Can disability provide new areas for discussion in philosophy of religion? Do disabilities imply a different access to spirituality? Does the conception of God as disabled provide new insight on classic issues ie., theodicy? PennEnglish: Calls for PapersCalls for Papers in English & American Literature Edited by Jennifer Higginbotham The English Department at the University of Pennsylvania hosts an electronic mailing list ( cfp@english.upenn.edu) and website (http://www.english.upenn.edu/CFP ) for calls for papers on English and American Literature and Culture. We encourage conference or panel organizers and volume editors to find the largest possible audience for their announcements by posting them on this list and web archive. Announcements can include upcoming conferences, panels, essay collections, and special journal issues related to English and American literature, and can include calls for completed papers, abstracts, and proposals. The boundaries are flexible: all English-language literatures, cultural studies, literary theory, bibliography, humanities computing, and comparative literature (even when not concerned specifically with English or American literature) are within the pale. Conferences or panels devoted exclusively to literature not in English, to music or art, to history, etc., are excluded unless they are relevant to students of English and American literature, as are lecture series, regular meetings of small local societies, fellowship opportunities, etc. Essay competitions and prizes are excluded unless they will result directly in publication or presentation of a paper. Calls for creative writing are also excluded. Due to the volume of postings and the fact that each posting must be approved and edited by hand, the CFP list and web archive is only for calls for papers, not for general conference announcements. If you have a paper you would like to present at the workshop please email the student coordinator for the workshop, Jennifer Vanore, at jvanore@uchicago.edu for available dates. As many of you know, The Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop provides an interdisciplinary forum for the development of critical perspectives on gender and sexuality. The workshop’s primary purpose is to promote analyses of the ways in which gender and sexuality intersect with other practices, constructs, and systems of domination. In bringing together work in queer and gender theory, workshop members build vocabularies and analytical tools in order to evaluate presentations with informed perspectives on how gender and sexuality theories inform and constitute one another. The workshop serves as a forum for discussing both graduate student papers and as-yet-unpublished work from scholars in the field. Graduate student presentations may focus on any area of gender and sexuality studies with gender and sexuality understood as always already embedded in other social practices and categorizations. Starting on October 10th, the workshop will meet every two weeks. Meetings will be held on the first floor of the Center for Gender Studies located at 5733 South University Avenue. The workshop will meet every other Tuesday from 4:30-6:00 PM. Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR)http://www.sagepub.com/journalsProdDesc.nav?prodId=Journal201775 The Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR) is a new, quarterly international journal (first issue due January 2007) that aims to publish empirical, methodological, and theoretical articles about mixed methods research. The editors seek empirical research studies across the social, behavioral, health, and human sciences that employ mixed methods research, and methodological manuscripts advancing knowledge about mixed methods research. Mixed methods research is defined as research in which the investigator collects and analyzes data, integrates the findings, and draws inferences using both qualitative and quantitative approaches or methods in a single study or program of inquiry. Of primary importance to journal editors will be building an international and multidisciplinary community of mixed methods researchers. JMMR invites articles from a wide variety of international perspectives across the social, behavioral, and human sciences. JMMR seeks original research in the social, behavioral, health, and human sciences that fits the definition of mixed methods research. These studies need to include some aspect of their research that advances knowledge of mixed methods research in addition to making a contribution to a substantive area in the scholars' field of inquiry. All submissions will be peer reviewed by anonymous reviewers, including members of the distinguished, multidisciplinary editorial board.
