INTERNSHIPS
The Delegation of the European Commission offers a variety
of internship positions at its office in Washington, DC. The New York
Delegation, too, offers internship positions. Please contact that Delegation
directly for more information on opportunities there.
Internships are intended to provide college and university
students and recent graduates with the opportunity to acquire considerable
knowledge of the European Union, its institutions, activities, laws, statistics
and relations with the US. Internship applicants may be of any nationality.
Internships at the Washington Delegation are offered
exclusively on a VOLUNTEER (unpaid) basis. Students enrolled in programs
providing academic credit are welcome. A working knowledge of FRENCH is useful,
but not essential. Preference is given to candidates available on a FULL TIME
basis, i.e., 35-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Internships are offered three times a year in keeping with
the "semester calendar" from: September through December (Fall
semester); January through May (Spring semester); June through August (Summer
session).

Eligibility
• Public and private schools are eligible for this
award to honor work done by professionals in a school setting to support
students with dyslexia.
• Private providers are not eligible.
• Nominations are accepted from any individual with
knowledge about a school that is doing good things for students with dyslexia
(parent, school board member, school district administrator).
• Self-nominations are also acceptable.
• It Takes a Village Award winners are eligible
for nomination five years after winning.

promotes caring competence in caregiving. In 2005, the

Stepanek Intergenerational Caregiving Scholarship was

Any institution or investigator who conducts research
involving human beings, including medical and social science research, or
who contributes to human research protection, is eligible to apply
for an Award; self-nomination is acceptable. There is no fee for applying
for an Award. Health Improvement Institute (Institute) launched the
Award for Excellence in
Human Research Protection in 2002 to encourage and to
recognize excellence and innovation in human research protection. The
Office for Human Research Protections of the Department of Health and
Human Services was the founding sponsor of the Awards program. Institutions
and individuals are eligible to apply for an Award. Awards are given
for demonstrated excellence in promoting the well-being of people who
participate in research. The Institute has established 3 annual
Awards, and announces the year's Award recipients in

The Washington Center Public Service Internship Program for
Students with Disabilities. Now in its 30th year, The Washington Center for
Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) is an educational nonprofit
organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the U.S. and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn
in Washington, D.C. for academic credit. The largest such program, TWC has over
33,000 alumni, many of whom are leaders in numerous professions and nations
around the world.

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)

disabilities.
The largest national nonprofit cross-disability member
organization in the United States, dedicated to ensuring economic
self-sufficiency and political empowerment for the more than 56 million
Americans with disabilities. AAPD works in coalition with other disability
organizations for the full implementation and enforcement of disability
nondiscrimination laws, particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

ABILITY Magazine (AM) and ABILITY Awareness (AA) both offer unique
and diverse opportunities for undergraduate juniors and seniors, recent
graduates, and graduate/professional students who are interested in health,
disability and human potential issues. The internship program has special
appeal for those who wish to combine academic study with practical application
and experience.
Internships are offered throughout the year to undergraduate juniors and
seniors, recent graduates, and graduate/professional students who have
demonstrated superior academic ability and who have course work, professional
or personal experience, and career interests related to disability issues. AM
and AA welcomes students from colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad.
Graduate Assistantship Program
AM and AA Graduate Assistantship Program offers a limited number of stipends to
graduate and professional students who have completed at least one year of
graduate study. The stipend is $1,500 for a 12-week, min 20-hour-per-week term.
Application Procedures
Many students receive academic credit for their internships through their
university or college. Those who wish to receive academic credit should
indicate so on the application and provide an internship supervisor's name and
address. The necessary forms from the academic institution must be submitted
upon acceptance to the program.

The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and
Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), and
Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) award grants to
doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants
provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university.
Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant
data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from
their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the
basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the
research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology
to be used in addressing the question.
