Gentrification and Poverty in the Eighties

In the 1980s, poverty further concentrated, but areas of wealth began to spread even faster.

 

The red areas are where income increased over 50% in the decade. The dark green areas, where poverty has decreased more than 50%. The lighter red and green areas show more modest increases and decreases.

 

Note that many poor areas on the south side could not possibly decline 50% because of how poor they were in the baseline year, 19809.
