References for Gangs in the Urban Crisis Era Gangs in Chicago which got their start in the 1950s have not disappeared like gangs in the past. The Vice Lords, Latin Kings, Blackstone Rangers, and Black Gangster Disciples, among other gangs, all have persisted to today. These gangs got there start like gangs always have, as deliquent groups in high poverty areas. In Lawndale, the Vice Lords formed from a sports team. On the southside, near the University of Chicago, the Blackstone Rangers, Gangster Disciples, and other African American gangs formed. The Latin Kings can trace their origins to the Young Lords Party in the 1960s, as well as to neigh-borhood friends. The Chicago Gang History Project is looking for people who have taken part in this history in one way or another. See the spread of concentrated poverty in the 1980s. |
