Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Week #02: January 22-26, 2007 (Classes #03-04)
Reading in Lecture Notes:
Section 3
MATERIAL
- Point source and dipole
- Flow around and expanding bubble
- Flow due to a moving sphere
- Virtual mass of a sphere
LEARNING GOALS
Upon reviewing the material for this week,
you should be able to:
- Recognize the mathematical form of a point source and dipole
- Define virtual mass
PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
After doing the homework for this week,
you should be able to:
- Solve for the flow field around an expanding bubble,
a moving sphere, or a combination of both (moving, expanding bubble).
- Write the velocity field for a moving sphere, and calculate its virtual mass.
- Obtain the generalized mass tensor for a system described by constraints and
generalized coordinates.
