Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Week #03: January 29 - February 2, 2007 (Classes #05-06)
Reading in Lecture Notes:
Section 4
MATERIAL
- Holonomic constraints
- Generalized coordinates and forces
- Lagrange's equations of motion for particle systems
LEARNING GOALS
Upon reviewing the material for this week,
you should be able to:
- Define and use generalized coordinates.
- Derive Lagrange's equations of motion for particle systems.
PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
After doing the homework for this week,
you should be able to:
- Express the independent degrees of freedom of constrained
systems in terms of generalized coordinates.
- Derive the mass tensor for particle systems described
by generalized coordinates
- Calculate generalized forces given the constraints of a system.
- Write the equations of motion for systems described
by arbitrary coordinate transformations and/or holonomic constraints.
