Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Week #04: February 5-9, 2007 (Classes #07-08)
Reading in Lecture Notes:
Section(s) 5 & 6
MATERIAL
- Lagrange's equations of motion for bodies immersed in an ideal fluid
- Oscillatory motions and nonlinear drift
LEARNING GOALS
Upon reviewing the material for this week,
you should be able to:
- Derive Lagrange's equations of motion for
translational and radial degrees of freedom of
a spherical particle in an ideal fluid
- Explain the origin of nonlinear drift forces
accompanying zero-mean fluctuations.
PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
After doing the homework for this week,
you should be able to:
- Derive and calculate virtual mass coefficients
for translational and pulsatile degrees of
freedom in 2d and 3d geometries
- Calculate nonlinear oscillatory drift forces for
a system with prescribed virtual mass functions.
