Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Week #05: February 12-16, 2007 (Classes #09-10)
Reading in Lecture Notes:
Section(s) 7 & 8
MATERIAL
- Method of reflections
- Method of images
LEARNING GOALS
Upon reviewing the material for this week,
you should be able to:
- Describe incident velocity fields on a sphere due to a source and dipole
in terms of a Taylor expansion about the center.
- Explain the leading dipolar reflection solution for
a uniform incident flow.
- Explain the concept of image dipole and how it
can cancel the normal component of an incident dipolar
field over a sphere.
PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
After doing the homework for this week,
you should be able to:
- Obtain the leading reflection solution for
an expanding or moving sphere near a fixed sphere.
- Determine the strength and location of an image
dipole corresponding to an incident dipole on a sphere.
- Estimate the order of error in boundary conditions
for various levels of approximations by the method
of reflections.
