Microhydrodynamics, Diffusion and Membrane Transport
Week #08: March 5-9, 2007 (Classes #15-16)
Reading in Lecture Notes:
Section(s)
13
MATERIAL
- Low Reynolds number scaling of the Navier-Stokes equations
and dimensionless form
- Stokes flow due to a moving sphere and the Stokeslet
LEARNING GOALS
Upon reviewing the material for this week,
you should be able to:
- Explain the low Reynolds number scaling of the Navier-Stokes equations.
- Explain how and why flow fields in potential flow
lead to solutions to the Stokes equations.
- Formulate a linear trial solution for the Stokes equations
using the vectors implied by the geometry.
PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
After doing the homework for this week,
you should be able to:
- Solve for the Stokes flow field in various problems
involving spherical boundaries.
