- Eugenia M. Cobbinah was an honor student at Lindblom High School in Chicago where she ranked 18th in her graduating class. On Sunday, June 2, 1996, a few weeks before her graduation, Eugenia was killed in a random drive-by shooting. She was guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That night, the world lost a leader. In a neighborhood where poor
schools and poverty too often repress teenage dreams, Eugenia was somehow able to rise above the mayhem. She planned to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago to pursue a career in nursing. Eugenia continuously looked for ways to help others. Throughout her senior year, she devoted her lunch periods to tutoring younger students in math and science. Eugenia's benevolence serves as the foundation of this scholarship.
The Eugenia M. Cobbinah Memorial Scholarship will be awarded once every four years to a financially disadvantaged, academically qualified Chicago Public Schools student.
