This issue of Political Communication Report opens with a Commentary on the participatory potential of new media formats. Erik Bucy describes his jointly-authored article in New Media & Society, which recently won one of the Awards from the Media Ecology Association in New York.

As PCR is published, political communication scholars are traveling to Seoul, South Korea, to attend the annual ICA annual conference, to Barcelona, Spain, to attend the IAMCR meetings, and to Chicago for ASA. Shortly we will congregate in Boston for the APSA convention.

APSA BOSTON links to the full political communication program. Other convention information includes a Message from Conference Chair Montague Kern, the agenda for the Business Meeting from Section Chair Darrell M. West, the program from the “Restless Searchlight” Symposium at the Shorenstein Center (yes, Pippa Norris, it’s in here!), and details about the Short Course, “Teaching Campaigns.”

The PROCEEDINGS section, under ICA Seoul, includes a complete listing of ICA Political Communication sessions, and, under ASA Culture, an outline of activities planned for the Culture Section meetings in Chicago. There are a number of listings for other Meetings, and the page of Calls includes a new journal, Popular Communication, and a new Summer institute at Washington University in St. Louis.

NEWS & NOTES includes a brief research item on the labels “liberal” and “conservative.” This issue’s Books page includes several new titles, and awards and funding programs are listed under Grants. Finally, there is a page of related Links.

SUBMISSIONS
This is the final issue of my term as editor of the joint APSA/ICA Political Communication newsletter. The Nominations Committee is searching for a new editor, along with a slate that includes officers and committee members. Submissions should be sent once the new editor has been announced.

My first issue of Political Communication Report was the last published on paper, and I’ve learned a new world of on-line publishing. Your comments on the new format have been very supportive. Each issue now reaches about 1000 readers. Members consult back issues regularly, and students and others find a useful first encounter with the work of our field.

I want to thank all those who sent in suggestions and items, especially the APSA section and ICA division officers, those who took time to write for the Commentary column, the many members who expressed support during my tenure, the staff members at APSA and ICA headquarters who supplied lists and sent out notices by e-mail and regular mail, and the editorial assistants who were generously funded by the UIC College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The newsletter could not have contained so much information and so many details without you, and I hope you will extend the same support to the next editor.

It’s been quite an experience! This fall I take up new administrative duties in my home department, which will keep me busy, but I do plan to stay involved in our organizations in other capacities. Thanks again!
