Progress to Date
The RRTCADD worked to include I/DD in the 7th International Alzheimer's Congress in 2000 held in Washington. Subsequently, the RRTCADD has been working with the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago, to incorporate I/DD in its public policy, training and education, and research agendas. The RRTCADD participated in the 8th International Alzheimer's Congress in Sweden and is developing specialty areas related to intellectual disabilities research and practice for the 10th International Alzheimer's Congress to be held in Philadelphia. The RRTC has also produced detailed resource materials for Alzheimer's Disease International in London that appear on its web site and are available in print. The RRTCADD was instrumental in producing a set of international guidelines for community care that could be adopted by national organizations to help drive practice and funding. These, now known as the Edinburgh Principles, lay out a series of commitments to quality community care that providers and government agencies can adopt. These have been published as Wilkinson, H.A., & Janicki, M.P. (2002) - [The Edinburgh principles with accompanying guidelines and recommendations. Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 46, 279-284.].
The RRTC also sponsored a series of symposia and papers at the XIth World Congress of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability (IASSID), which was held in Seattle during August 2000. At the Congress, the RRTC was recognized for its achievements in the area of aging and disability research and its leadership role within the IASSID. The RRTC, since 2001, is now a fully recognized Research Center affiliate of the IASSID and will be instrumental in promoting the scientific program in aging and ID at the next IASSID World Congress to be held in Montpellier, France in 2004. The RRTC has also contributed the IASSID-WHO reports cited in TA1.1 and its members have edited to a special issue of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work containing papers of significance from the XIth IASSID World Congress.
