Training and Technical Assistance (1998-2003)

Employee Retention Assistance (Harvey Sterns, Ph.D)

Objective

To enable older workers to maintain employability and to successfully transition to volunteerism and retirement.

Target Audience

Providers, state vocational rehabilitation agency personnel, area agencies on aging, state labor department officials, employment workers

Progress to Date

Provided technical assistance to service agencies and employers to support the continued employability of older workers with I/DD. Provided technical assistance on pensioning and worker benefits based on the national survey findings. Helped adults with I/DD better understand their vocational identities as they move from middle age to later life - with this understanding the adults have been able to make lifestyle decisions on whether to continue to work and under what conditions. Developed employer technical aid materials useful for human resource departments so they address the needs of older workers more equitably. Have produced draft manual on employability for advocates and older workers with I/DD.
