Training and Technical Assistance (1998-2003)

Training on Housing and Financial Trust Arrangements
Alan Factor, Ph.D; *Rick Berkobien, MSW

Objective

To teach families, service providers, and other professionals about family-financed housing and pooled trust programs, two underutilized future planning options.

Target Audience

Families, community service agency staff, financial planners attorneys.

Product Outputs

Training modules will be developed on family financed housing and on pooled trusts. Handbook explaining pooled trusts (available). A handbook on family financed housing is being developed.

Training Content

Modules will describe different pooled trust and family financed housing models. Pros and cons in terms of overall cost, ongoing family oversight, participation of the individual with a disability in making plans, potential benefits, and best operating practices.

Progress to Date

The Arc has conducted the workshops on financial and legal planning and family caregiving at its annual meetings. Training on family financed housing has been delayed as the research study was deferred until Year 3. The study has been completed and the first Workshop will be conducted at the national Arc annual convention in October 2002.

Utility of the Training

Local and state Arcs that have gone through the training are contacting Arc agencies that have pooled trusts to explore their feasibility.
