Enhancing the Employability of Older Adults with Mental Retardation
(Harvey Sterns, Ph.D)

Objective

Identifying and developing employment accommodations for older adults with mental retardation and the provisions of the newly authorized Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998.

Target Audience

Service providers, vocational rehabilitation staff.

Training Materials

A training curriculum will be developed to demonstrate applications of our manual on work place accommodations.

Training Content

Brief review of Title I of the ADA; sensitization exercises to make participants aware of their attitudes toward older adults with I/DD; how to support employees in articulating their needs; guidelines for gaining employer support for accommodations, discuss new provisions of the Rehabilitation Act of 1998.

Progress to Date

Developing a consumer curriculum on choosing a job and dealing with work place changes. Modules include: What is work; How to choose a job you like; Dealing with changes at work; Your rights and responsibilities as an employee.
