Overview

With over 150 years of its unique history, the city referred to as the "Windy City" by some visitors is home to many famous and interesting people, world-class architecture, sports teams, museums, and cultural attractions. Chicago has a broad and diverse population of nearly 3 million people in over 70 neighborhoods. Stretching 29 miles along the shore of Lake Michigan, the Chicago region encompasses the city and its surrounding suburbs and includes six counties in Illinois. The City is traditionally divided between the North, West and South sides. The central part of the city is commonly known as "the Loop."

In May, expect an average high temperature of 70 F (21 C) and a low of 50 F (10 C) with approximately 11 rainy days. For current weather conditions, see the Chicago Metropolitan Weather Forecast

TRANSPORTATION

Chicago is serviced by two airports, O'Hare International and Midway Airport. Following is some information on both airports, along with the transportation services provided from each location.

O'Hare International Airport, 773/686-2200

Chicago O'Hare International Airport handles more passengers than any other airport in the world. The three domestic terminals are linked to allow passengers quick and easy access between them and the automated Airport Transit System offers fast transfer between the domestic terminals, the International Terminal and economy parking lots.

For visitors needing information or directions, airport information booths are located on the lower levels of the domestic terminals and on the upper and lower levels of the International Terminal. A foreign currency exchange is located on the lower level of the International Terminal.

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)

CTA's rapid transit train between downtown (Dearborn St.subway) and O'Hare is easy, quick (just 40 minutes) and costs only $1.50. Blue Line trains leave from inside the O'Hare terminal on the lower level every 5 to 10 minutes days and evenings, (every 30 minutes 1 to 5am). Follow overhead signs ("Trains to the City") to the CTA station between Terminals 2 and 3.

Continental Airport Express

Continental's Airport Express provides van service between O'Hare International Airport and all downtown hotels, the North Shore and Oak Brook suburbs. Ticket counters are located across from baggage claim areas. One-way ticket from O'Hare to downtown Chicago (the Loop) is $17/$30 round-trip. Vans depart as frequently as every 5 minutes. For information call 312/454-7799.

Taxi Service
