by STEP=UP students.

STEP=UP students met with their CPS Partner teachers on Tuesday, October 24, 2006, for the first field advisory of the year. In preparation for this meeting, CPS Partners selected literacy artifacts from their classrooms to present to the UIC Partners. UIC Partners in turn came prepared to lead discussions around issues of educational practice.

Much like last month’s Partner Connection meeting, art and imagery were again hot topics of discussion. One CPS Partner teacher shared photos from a class trip and the stories students wrote based on the photos. Another group talked about the importance of making "mind pictures" while listening to or reading a story as a way of following the plot, then drawing some of those pictures as a way of illustrating students' understanding of the story.

One artifact focused on the transferal of literacy skills from the school environment to the real world. Students familiarized themselves with a Taco Bell menu and then went to the restaurant to order a meal. The discussion of teaching literacy and life skills was interesting - but it also made everyone hungry!

The value of teacher to teacher communication was addressed by another group. The CPS partner wanted the UIC students to understand the value of communicating with one another; she stressed that it is generally useful but can also be very empowering.
