January 24, 2006 Chicago Public Schools Partners' Professional Development

On January 24, 2006, STEP=UP staff members conducted an orientation / professional development meeting with a group of CPS Partners.

Each CPS Partner selected one artifact, or one example, from their classroom that showed how students learn literacy. At the meeting, CPS Partners used that artifact in small group discussions centered on the definition of literacy, ways to select classroom examples, and how to identify and describe how their students learn about the components of literacy (reading, writing, speaking and listening.)

These discussions led to a large group discussion of the study of literacy in the UIC teacher preparation program and an overview of the Special Education Masters degree program.

They deliberated over the wide variety of talents that UIC students have to offer, and considered ways to weave together those ideas with partners' insights and teaching experiences in order to form small "study groups" of teachers at various phases of their careers.
