BROWN BAG DISCUSSION SERIES

Last year SUAA sponsored a highly successful series of lunch-time "brown bag" discussions. Upcoming in the new series: October 27, 12:00 pm, Room 603 SCE, Edward Suntrup, Retired Associate Professor of Managerial Studies, will speak on "A Full-Time Career after Academic Retirement and After 65: The Life of a Professional Labor Arbitrator."

Professor Suntrup retired from the College of Business Administration in September of 2001 after teaching labor relations at UIC for 25 years. In 2002, at the age of 64, he embarked upon a full-time career as a labor arbitrator. He currently serves as permanent arbitrator for the City of New York and Chicago transit systems, for the BNSF railroad and its unions, for the Canadian Pacific railroad, and for the International Steel Group and the United Steel Workers. His new career requires extensive travel, about 25 trips a year. Labor arbitration has traditionally been a "geriatric profession" in the U.S. Professor Suntrup will discuss what this means and would appreciate hearing the views of the brown bag participants on the pros and cons of having a full-time career at the age of 67 and/or after retirement from one's main life-long occupation.

SUAA/UIC CAPTURES AWARDS

At the annual state SUAA meeting in Springfield in June, the UIC chapter received two membership awards: one for increased membership in 2004-05, and one for the second largest gain in members over the last year. Though many people have worked to bring this about, our special congratulations go to Geraldine Piorkowski, our Membership chair.
