Laurette Kirstein

Laurette Kirstein died on May 31 in Chicago at the age of 87. She first joined the Navy Pier campus as an instructor in the early 1950's, and took an interest - which turned out to be a pioneering one for UIC - in the learning problems of foreign students entering the country through the Displaced Persons Act. But her interest in immigration dated back to 1939 when she became a part-time interviewer for the Immigrants' Protective League at Hull House.

As the first and only head of the Office for Foreign Student-Staff Affairs, she worked tirelessly until 1993 as both an administrator and as an assistant, then associate professor in English as a foreign language. She received her B.A. and M.A. at DePaul University, and was a long-time member of the UIC SUAA Board. Her former colleagues all send their best wishes to her family.
