UIC Chapter of SUAA
Minutes of the Executive
Board Meeting
April 27, 2004
|
|
Present: Frank Tachau, Roz Hoffman, Kathleen Crittenden, Judy Curry,
Ralph Westfall, Dick Johnson, Merrill Gassman, Wally Wadycki, and
Susan Levy
Frank Tachau called the meeting to order at 10:40 am. The minutes of
the last meeting were approved as amended.
- Frank gave an update on CCC office space and the ongoing "negotiations"
for appropriate space. He will keep us informed.
- Irene Kogan called Frank regarding resigning as membership co-chair
due to other commitments. She has volunteered to assist with some of the other
social activities arrangements. Gerry Piorkowski is now the sole membership
chair.
- updates on phone and e-mail
Alberta Bowles: (home phone number available on request)
Robert Kriz: rjkriz@gbronline.com
Anita Tatone: mstatone@aol.com
- Discussion re: Spring SUAA meeting on May 20th and arrangements
for sending out another letter to draw as many members as possible and perhaps
recruit more new members for the James Hacking, Executive Director
of SURS, presentation.
- Discussion on increasing SUAA UIC membership and recruiting from those currently
employed as the large untapped group as well as about 80% of the potential
UIC annuitants. The group went over a list of possible College liaisons and
decided to continue to try and discover other suggestions for influential
contacts around campus and in physical plant and staff positions. The idea
is for the college reps to perhaps forward a letter about SUAA and its work
to their constituents with an application.
- Judy Curry commented on the role of "historian" for UIC
SUAA, especially now that there are so many new retirees on the Board.
- Merrill Gassman opened a discussion on a possible name change for
the Chapter. One comment was that we need a name that is more descriptive
and inviting for younger, employed members as well as more understandable
of what we do. The name is still being discussed, and offers are welcome.
- Roz Hoffman would like us to help find another person(s) to take
over the newsletter duties. Frank said he would contact John Cepek, who would
be a good choice.
- Dick Johnson reported on legislative matters which included the Social
Security reduction for people who have a public state pension. It will not
fly this year as there is not enough support for a discharge petition.
On another important issue, while we should and must advocate for better State
funding of our pension funds, it is important that we consider not getting ourselves
into a confrontational competition with the general higher education budget.
- Treasurer Wally Wadycki reported that the total in SUAA-UIC's Credit
Union 1 account is $30,401. There is $28,159 in savings and $2,242 in
checking. Checks not cleared or to be written shortly include $190 for the
Theatre Party on 4/24/04 and about $1000 for duplication costs and $1000 for
mailing costs that are owed to Judy Curry's office for three SUAA-UIC
mailings. Reservation money for the 5/20/04 annual membership meeting
will be due shortly as well.
- Next three general meetings:
| Fall meeting: Oct. 13, 2004 |
| Holiday Party: Week of Dec. 6-10, 2004 |
| Spring meeting: April 21, 2005 |
- Irene Kogan will try to arrange another theater Chicago performance
at the Cultural Center.
- Executive Board Meeting dates: Aug. 19, 2004; Nov. 19, 2004; and
April 1, 2005
Adjourned 1:00 PM
