President Frank Tachau called the meeting to order at 10:45 am. Present were: Gerry Piorkowski, Susan R. Levy, Wally Wadycki, Dick Johnson, and Merrill Gassman.

1. Frank asked that Kevin Navratil, a student worker who has been assisting in the preparation of membership recruitment letters, be added to the Board listserv list so that he can be informed about our activities.

2. Wally gave the treasurer's report which indicated that State dues collections for our chapter were stable as were our planned budget allocations. For June 30, 2003, the ending balance in our account was $32,401; for June 30, 2004, it was $31,444.14; and, as of July 31, 2004, it was $32,556.91.

3. Frank noted that we needed to appoint a new audit committee of two individuals for 2004-5. Two names were suggested: Louis Vlna and Wayne Wolf. Frank offered to talk with them and noted that they had helped previously.

4. Gerry reported on membership. She received a list of UIC SURS retirees from the SUAA office; 1900 people have retired in the last five years. We will send a recruitment letter to them as well as to the UIC community via a mass e-mailing*. About 600 letters signed by college and/or departmental liaisons have been sent so far to recent retirees.

*The general letter will go thru campus e-mail to all active employees to alert them to what SUAA does, and continually needs to do, to keep our benefits strong.

Announcements

The afternoon of Sept. 21st will see the first in a series of SUAA-sponsored seminars under the coordination of Irv Miller. The topic will be the upcoming election and its interpretations and should be very interesting.

Teresa Soto, Vice Chancellor Savage’s administrative aide, has informed Frank that they are trying to meet SUAA’s space needs for an office.

The General Fall meeting will be Oct. 13, 2004. At Roz Hoffman's invitation, Tom Lemont, former UI Trustee and Interim Director of IBHE, will speak. Dick Johnson suggested that we consider President Stukel as a possible future speaker.

Discussion ensued on filling several open positions on the Board.

The meeting adjourned at 12:15 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan R. Levy, Secretary
