UIC Chapter of SUAA

Minutes of the Spring Meeting

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

1. The meeting was called to order by President Irving Miller at 10:09am.

2. Minutes of the Fall meeting held on September 27, 2005 were approved.

3. President's Report----President Miller gave a brief report of the Board's activities. They were as follows:

Frank Tachau will serve as Acting Ttreasurer during Wally Wadycki convalescence. Nancy Hirsch is also stepping down as Program Chair; that position will be filled by Susan Sindelar

4. Legislative Report---- Dick Johnson reported that SUAAACTION is the name of the Political Involvement Committee (PIC) formed by the State organization to help protect benefits and pension. Our pension is guaranteed but other benefits may be diminished. SUAAACTION is encouraging people on the campaign trail, meeting with legislators, and assisting local chapters with work on political issues. SUAA is becoming more politically active and hopes to energize SURS members. There is considerable potential represented in the constituent 50 community colleges and 12 universities; SUAAACTION plans to capitalize on this resource.

5. Treasurer's Report ----- Frank Tachau presented the Treasurer's report. The Annual Audit was completed by a committee consisting of Ralph Westfall and Wayne Wolfe and submitted to the Chapter's Board of Directors for approval. Based on the review of the summary of assets as of June 30, 2005 it appears to reflect fairly the financial activity as reported. The balance in savings was $33,743.83 and, in checking, $464.88. It was recommended that the savings be moved into an instrument that generates more income.

As of March 31, 2006, the balance in savings was $36,000 and, in checking, $17,000 .

6. Membership Report----Geraldine Piorkowski reported that 90 new members were added this month, bringing the total membership to 1400, a new high for the Chapter. The increased memberships are credited to activity from the Retirement Conference, the Springfield mailing that was sent to 700 UIC SURS members across the state, two e-mailings sent to current employees, and two mailings to recent retirees. Volunteers are needed to make telephone calls to those who have not renewed.

7. Items Requiring Vote of the Membership----Upon recommendation of the Board of Directors, the membership approved the following changes:

a. The Chapter name was changed from "The University of Illinois at Chicago Chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association (Illinois)", to "UIC United, a Chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association (Illinois)."
b. Amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws: Constitution Amendments include Article I, Section 1; Article II, Section 3; Article III, Section 2; Article III Section 6; Article IV, Section 1, and Article IV, Section 5. Bylaws Amendments include Article IV, Sections 1&2 and Article VII.

c. The fee for Family Membership in the Chapter (two SURS members living in the same household) was increased from $50 to $55 so that the Chapter does not sustain a loss in its portion of the membership dues.

8. New Business----Merrill Gassman, the Chapter webmaster, reported that the number of email addresses in the database increased from 33% to 48% of the total membership during the past year. He encouraged the membership to keep him informed of any changes in email addresses. Members were also urged to visit the Chapter website for news, legislative alerts, and updates. State of Illinois election information as well as legislators can be found through links provided on the site.

9. The meeting was adjourned at 10:50am.

Respectfully Submitted,

Marsha Borders, Secretary
