| Clerkship Goals: When
you finish your core family medicine clerkship at UIC-Christ, you will have accomplished:
- improving your knowledge of the unique aspects of the specialty of family
practice--how it began, what it is, what it encompasses, and where it's headed;
- improving your skill in interacting with patients and their families,
diagnosing their illnesses, and treating them effectively and compassionately.

The Clerkship Experience
The family medicine clerkship at UIC-Christ (4-6 weeks) emphasizes
hands-on learning. You will start each day at morning report, where students,
residents, and faculty engage in a lively discussion of the diagnosis and initial
treatment of the patients admitted to the hospital overnight.
During morning, afternoon, and occasional evening office sessions, you
will care for outpatients under the direct supervision of a resident or attending
physician. You will have responsibility for interviewing and examining your
patients, discussing diagnosis and treatment with your preceptor, and sometimes presenting
the case to an attending physician. You will typically be encouraged to exercise as
much independence as you feel comfortable with at your skill level, but always with
supervision.
You will also have opportunity to participate in nursing home rounds,
family practice inpatient rounds, hospital pastoral care rounds, and urgent care/emergency
department visits.
While we don't believe that lectures substitute for clinical experience,
you will be included in all the residency lectures. Topics covered include general
family medicine, sports medicine, preventive medicine, maternal and child health,
behavioral medicine, adolescent medicine, and evidence based medicine.
With this combination of didactic and
"real-world" clinical experience, your will finish the clerkship with a better
understanding of family practice, and better patient management skills. We hope to
send you on your way a better physician in whatever path your career may follow.
