| The family practice subinternship (4-8 weeks) at
UIC-Christ provides the fourth year medical student the opportunity to manage inpatients
on the family practice service at Christ Hospital, one of the premier teaching hospital in
the U.S. As a student, with appropriate supervision, you will
function as a first-year resident, making daily rounds on your assigned patients, writing
progress notes and orders, reporting to the senior family practice resident, and
performing initial assessments on new admissions to the service. You will
participate in daily teaching rounds led by family medicine faculty, interact with
subspecialty consultants, and attend residency didactic conferences. The clerkship's
goal is to introduce you to the care of inpatients from the family medicine perspective,
and to allow you to enhance your skill in the assessment and management of serious acute
illnesses such as chest pain, sepsis syndromes, urinary tract infections, lower
respiratory infections, stroke, acute gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, and
others.
Through the combination of hands-on inpatient care responsibilities and
didactic training, you will complete the clerkship possessing greater confidence in your
acute illness management skills, which will be an asset to you as you enter your chosen
field of residency training.
The clerkship is directed by Dr. Merry Demko. |
