Top Hospital
The Family Medicine Residency program at Christ Hospital
and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois, is proud of its 25-year association with one of
the nation's most distinguished teaching hospitals. Christ Hospital and Medical
Center has received national acclaim as one of the best hospitals in the nation:
Christ Hospital was recently named one of the
nation's top 100 hospitals and one of the top 15 major teaching hospitals in the United
States as part of an annual study, 100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success.
Christ Hospital was ranked among the top 100
hospitals in the nation for coronary artery bypass graft surgeries.
Advocate Health Care, Christ Hospital's parent
system, was rated number one among the nation's top 100 integrated health care networks.
Christ Hospital was ranked among the top
hospitals in Chicagoland overall and in the three categories--cardiology, oncology and
orthopedic services--that were included in the 1998 Chicago Top Hospitals Study.
As a state-designated Level I trauma center,
Christ Hospital's emergency department serves more than 65,000 patients annually.
Nearly 4,000 babies are born at Christ
Hospital each year. As a state-designated Level III perinatal center, the hospital
offers complete medical and surgical services for pediatric patients from newborns through
adolescents.

Larry Roy, M.D., director of the pediatric
residency program at Hope Children's Hospital, was voted "Teacher of the Year"
four years in a row by University of Illinois at Chicago medical students.
Melvin Wichter, M.D., director of neurology,
has received top Chicago honors in his field and is a stoke center pioneer.
Marc Silver, M.D., one of the nation's leading
experts on congestive heart failure, recently moved his base of operations from Loyola
Medical Center to Christ Hospital.
Rene Arcilla, M.D., and Michel Ilbawi, M.D.,
lead an internationally recognized team of pediatric cardiology specialists at the Heart
Institute for Children, located at Hope Children's Hospital.
The Christ Hospital Family Medicine Residency
program includes nationally recognized teachers representing such diverse areas as wound
care, women's health, managed care, public health, addictions, geriatrics, sports medicine

offers evidence-based medicine and critical pathways training and assistance with faculty
and resident research. In support of research endeavors, Advocate sponsors the
annual Nesset Research Forum and publishes The Journal of Advocate Health Care.

Over the past 25 years, more than 130 graduates of the
Christ Hospital Family Practice Residency program have provided over $5 billion in health
services and treated hundreds of thousands of patients all over the U.S. in urban, rural
and suburban family practices, many in underserved settings. Among national family

William Schwer, M.D. (1982 Fellowship):
Rush Family Practice Chair; serves on the National Stroke Advisory Commission.
Jacqueline Bardwell, M.D. (1987):
Christ's Family Practice associate program director is nationally recognized for women's
health and domestic violence screening.
Carolyn Lopez, M.D. (1981): Chair of
Family Practice at Cook County Hospital and the national AAFP public health commission
chairperson.
Tanya Jones Brandon, M.D. (1982): Chair
of Family Practice at Moorehouse University and on the board of the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine.
David Whitehill, M.D. (1986): Program
director at Carle Clinic.
Norm Ryan, M.D. (1983): Medical director
of United Health Care in Illinois.
