Over the last several years, there has been considerable discussion of the development of a child-care program that includes an infant-care facility at UIC as part of an effort to enhance recruitment and retention of faculty and staff and to support students with infant children. As an outgrowth of this discussion a study of the need for and feasibility of developing an infant care facility was commissioned by the Provost and conducted by Bright Horizons, Inc., a leader in the childcare industry. In the fall of 2007, Provost Tanner formed an ad hoc committee (the Infant and Toddler Task Force) to review results of this study and make recommendations on possible actions. The committee agreed that its discussions and deliberations should be predicated on the infant-care study provided by Bright Horizons, Inc., supplemented by information obtained from the UIC Children’s Center. The Bright Horizons study, completed in the summer of 2006 and updated in January of 2008, is attached as an addendum to the recommendations which have been published in a report.
