PROFESSIONAL ELECTIVE SCHEDULING

PROFESSIONAL ELECTIVE SCHEDULING

Policy and Procedure

  1. The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) is the administrative unit responsible for distribution of the undergraduate professional elective manual. The unit will be responsible for maintaining a data base of programmatic offerings from the College of Pharmacy, the Department of Medical Education and other sources acceptable for professional elective credit. In order to obtain professional elective credit for courses not listed in the professional elective manual, the student must have the course approved by his/her faculty advisor in consultation with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

  2. Professional electives offered by the College of Pharmacy will be approved by the normal procedures governing all courses, including departmental, EPC and college approvals.

  3. If a department chooses not to offer an elective, a brief explanation (e.g. faculty resigned) must be submitted to the EPC for approval prior to a formal decision regarding availability.  This must be done at least one month before the scheduled registration time for the subsequent semester. Once a change has been approved by EPC, the Office of Academic Affairs will be notified which elective courses will not be taught and reasons for this, given a target date for when the course will again be available to the students. Changes in scheduling of an elective during the academic year must be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs for approval. The Office of Academic Affairs will notify the EPC of any schedule changes as an information item only.

  4. If a department would like to delete an elective from the curriculum entirely, a request must be submitted to the EPC for approval. Once approved by the EPC, the request to delete the course will be forwarded to the faculty for a vote.
