ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ROLE OF TEACHING ASSISTANTS

Teaching assistants (TAs) at UIC College of Pharmacy are utilized to help teach professional pharmacy students (entry-level Pharm.D. and CCO).  The primary responsibility of a TA is to assist faculty in strengthening concepts presented in lectures, recitations and laboratories in specified courses.  TAs are also expected to help students with homework and other assignments.  A TA is also expected to maintain confidentiality of testing, evaluations, and other course materials.  At the end of the semester, each TA’s performance will be evaluated by the course coordinator.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF TEACHING ASSISTANTS

Responsibilities of TAs may include any or all of the following as assigned by the course coordinator:

 LECTURES/RECITATIONS

Ø      Attend all lectures/recitations for the purpose of being able to tutor students

Ø      Facilitate recitations as assigned

Ø      Complete the assigned homework problems/cases individually

Ø      Assist in the photocopying and distribution of handout materials

Ø      Prepare multimedia equipment or other audiovisual equipment for presentations at the start of a class; make sure equipment is turned off following class

Ø     Collect, collate, and distribute sets of handouts and examinations

Ø      Assist in distribution of instructor/course evaluations

 

LABORATORIES

Ø      Inventory and order as needed supplies and equipment

Ø     Receive ordered supplies, equipment; distribute or store

Ø      Prepare laboratory for student use; clean-up following laboratory

Ø      Prepare and monitor laboratories

Ø      Grade laboratory assignments as required (e.g., formulations, quizzes, tests, reports)

Ø      Prepare and present pre-laboratory talks

 

EXAMINATIONS

Ø      Proctor examinations

Ø      Grade essays, math problems, etc.

Ø      Prepare answer key after examination with the assistance of the course coordinator or other faculty member

Ø     Carry scan sheets to computer center for electronic scoring (multiple choice questions)

Ø     Alphabetize student answer sheets and return to students

Ø     Tally scores, prepare distribution curves

Ø     Keep records of examinations, quiz, laboratory grades

 

ASSIST STUDENTS

Ø     Maintain office hours at times not in conflict with students’ schedules

Ø     Tutor students as needed

 

OTHER

Ø     Meet with faculty advisor on a regular basis

Ø     Perform other duties as assigned
