There will be eight quizzes/homework assignments that cover lecture material as indicated in the course syllabus. There will be 2 non-cumulative 50-minute examinations. The grade distribution for the course is as follows:

Quizzes/Homework assignments:  40%
First exam   30%

All requests for corrections in a homework, quiz or exam score must be made with the course coordinator within 5 business days of receiving the score in question.

Grading Policy:

A minimum of 60% of the total points is required to receive a passing grade. All students scoring above 90% of the total points will receive an A for the course. Final grade distribution will be based upon either a straight point break scale or a percentile-based distribution, depending on the performance of the class.

Attendance:

Attendance and participation in all class lectures is strongly recommended.  Students are responsible for all material covered during class lecture periods whether or not it is referred to on the handout, discussed in the required readings or posted to the website.  Students should come to class on time.

Technology Requirements:

As part of an effort to integrate technology into the curriculum, portions of PHAR 365 will be available on the Internet.  The course website will give you access to all of the available course material from participating faculty.  In addition, all faculty may be accessed by email via this page. This website will also contain a conferencing feature.  You will receive more information about conferencing and the URL for the website in class.

Please note: there will be portions of the course that will require you to use the course website.  For example, a portion of your quizzes/homework will require that you submit your answers via the Internet using conferencing software (Webboard).  Therefore, you must know how to access the Internet to participate in PHAR 365.  There are computers in the student computer lounge as well as campus facilities that have the capabilities (e.g. Netscape and Explorer software) that you will need to complete these requirements.

  Quizzes and Homework Assignments:

There will be eight quizzes or homework assignments during this course. Homework assignments may be internet-based or paper-based. Quizzes will be given during the first 10 minutes of the class time. Students will be allowed to drop one quiz/homework assignment score. Each student’s overall quiz/homework score will be based on the remaining seven quizzes/assignments. Make-up quizzes/homework assignments will not be allowed. Quizzes/homework assignments missed due to illness or absence at professional meetings will be considered as the dropped score.

  Examinations:

Make-up exams will be given for an excused absence only. Any student who will miss an exam must notify the Office of Student Affairs (996-7242) of his/her absence prior to the scheduled examination to obtain an excused absence. Absence during a scheduled examination for attendance at a professional meeting must be approved by the course coordinator by January 31, 2001. Failure to comply with these policies will result in a score of zero for the missed examination. Make-up examinations will be scheduled by the course coordinators.

Academic Dishonesty:

In all work, students must adhere to the guidelines regarding academic integrity as described in the UIC Student Handbook and the UIC Undergraduate Catalog. Academic dishonesty, as defined on the course website, will not be tolerated. A student who admits to, or is proven to have committed, an act of academic dishonesty on any assignment, quiz or examination, will receive a score of zero for the assignment or test and will automatically fail the course. All incidents will be reported to the appropriate administrative officials for further action.
