Hematology/Oncology
The members of the Clinical Pharmacy Team for Hematology and Oncology provide pharmaceutical care to patients diagnosed with a variety of hematological and oncological diseases within the University of Illinois Medical Center in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Clinical pharmacy services include patient education, safety and efficacy of drugs used by patients with various malignancies, anticipation and management of chemotherapy induced adverse events, pain and other symptom management.
The clinicians are responsible for research and scholarly activities relating to the clinical use of the chemotherapy agents and other supportive care drugs. They participate in interdisciplinary research programs and oversee the oncology investigational drug service. Members of the group participate in campus wide oncology related activities including cancer center protocol review committee.
The clinical pharmacists are also responsible for instructions to
pharmacy and medical students and residents. Members of this clinical
pharmacy group have contributed to the training of over 100 pharmacy
residents, including eight Oncology specialty residents. Dr. Sandra
Cuellar is currently the program director of the Oncology Specialty
Residency. At present time, more than 50% of the members are Board
Certified in Oncology Pharmacy.
