Urban Health Program

Mission Statement

"The purpose of SNPhA is to plan, organize, coordinate, and execute programs geared toward the improvement of the health, social, and educational environment of the community; while providing opportunities for professional development."

History

The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) was founded in 1972 as the student affiliate of the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA). The first meeting was held on the campus of Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, FL. SNPhA is an education and service association of pharmacy students and high school affiliate members, concerned about pharmacy, and health care issues; and the need for greater minority representation in pharmacy and other health professions.

 Objectives

1. To offer student members the opportunity to develop leadership skills.
2. To educate students about national health care issues.
3. To develop within all communities, a positive image of minority health professionals.
4. To educate minority communities about better health care practices, and to increase their awareness and understanding of diseases.

Activities

• Plan and implement health awareness projects (e.g. sickle cell anemia and immunization awareness, diabetes screening, safe use of medications, poison prevention).
• Coordinate regional meetings.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute an annual national convention.
• Plan and execute chapter advisor workshops.
• Publish a Chapter Management Manual and Regional Meeting Planner.
• Publish a newsletter, "The Signatura."
• Develop partnerships with companies to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.
• Provide career development information and opportunities.
