UIC College of Pharmacy

Advising Program

Advising within the college of pharmacy differs from traditional academic advising as course selection is not a major aspect.  One way of viewing the advising experience at the college is to consider it to be one of the first opportunities for students to develop a professional relationship with a faculty member.  It is a component of the educational process that occurs outside of the classroom.  It is hoped that the process can stimulate an environment of relationship, mentoring and professional development.  Check out the page on “Mentoring” and the “Mentoring Stages.”

Initial stages/meeting should focus on establishing a relationship, i.e., exchanging contact information, establishing rapport and building trust, and coming to an agreement about what’s to be expected in the relationship.  Once rapport and trust are developed (which might take a while), you can work toward achieving specific, agreed-upon goals.  Please see “Advising Stages” for elaboration.
