Students Working

UIC Learning Goals in General Education (and the major)

BASIC COMPETENCIES

  • Written and Oral Communication
Students should learn to write clearly and persuasively and demonstrate the ability to gather evidence and to construct a coherent argument. Students must learn to shape speech and writing to the nature of the audience.
  • Reading and Listening Abilities
Reading and listening involve the ability not only to comprehend what is said or written but to engage with the ideas of another speaker or writer and to weigh critically evidence and points of view.
  • Logical and Critical Thinking
Effective listening and reading also require one to exercise critical and independent thought. The development of writing, speaking, and listening ability requires higher order skills of logical and critical thinking. Students must learn to differentiate between objective information and subjective points of view and to identify ways of making provisional judgments.
  • Quantitative Reasoning and Computer Literacy
The development of quantitative reasoning in mathematics or statistics combined with a basic computer literacy is essential in contemporary technological society.
