Learning Goals in General Education (and the major)

COMPETENCIES
- Written
and Oral Communication
Students should learn to write clearly and persuasively and demonstrate
the ability to gather evidence and to construct a coherent argument.
Students must learn to shape speech and writing to the nature of
the audience.
- Reading
and Listening Abilities
Reading and listening involve the ability not only to
comprehend what is said or written but to engage with the ideas
of another speaker or writer and to weigh critically evidence and
points of view.

Logical and Critical Thinking
Effective
listening and reading also require one to exercise critical and
independent thought. The development of writing, speaking, and listening
ability requires higher order skills of logical and critical thinking.
Students must learn to differentiate between objective information
and subjective points of view and to identify ways of making provisional
judgments.
- Quantitative
Reasoning and Computer Literacy
The development of quantitative reasoning in mathematics or statistics
combined with a basic computer literacy is essential in contemporary
technological society.
