Qualifications for Admission

Master of Public Health, Master of Science Degrees
The minimum admission requirement for all applicants to Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science (MS) programs in any division includes the following:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited school is the minimum requirement for admission; a master's or doctoral degree in an area relevant to public health is preferred.

Master of Healthcare Administration
The minimum admission requirement for all applicants to the Master of Healthcare Administration includes the following:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited school is the minimum requirement for admission.

Doctor of Public Health and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees
For the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree, the minimum admission requirements include the following:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited school of public health or public health training program
  • Three or more years of full-time, paid, professional experience in public health in a leadership position, or in mid- to senior-level management positions that demonstrate progressive responsibility and evidence of leadership potential.

Applicants meeting the experience requirements but with a master’s or higher degree outside the field of public health will be considered but will be required to make up deficiencies in content equivalent to the MPH core courses.
For the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs, the minimum admission requirement for all applicants includes the following:

  • A baccalaureate and a master’s degree from an accredited school, at least one of which is in the biological, physical, or social sciences

Depending on the degree program, some divisions may have additional admission requirements specific to their area.  Please see these additional requirements by division below:

Community Health Sciences

MPH and MS Applicants:

  • Preference is given to applicants who have had graduate training or experience in a public health-related field

Epidemiology

MPH and MS Applicants:

  • Preference for applicants with baccalaureate degree with a major in biological sciences or mathematics
  • GPA of at least 4.00 (A =5.00)

PhD Applicants:

  • PhD applicants are expected to have a master’s degree.

Biostatistics

MPH Applicants:

  • Eligibility for the MPH degree does not require calculus, but some evidence of a strong quantitative interest and aptitude is required.

MS Applicants:

  • At least one year of college calculus (up to and including multiple integration)
  • Courses in linear algebra and computer programming are recommended

PhD Applicants:

  • PhD applicants must have a master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics.

Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences

MPH and MS Applicants:

  • Two semesters of calculus
  • One year of general chemistry
  • At least one semester of organic chemistry
  • One course in Human Physiology – ONLY for those interested in traineeships in ASAC-ABET – Accredited MPH Program in Industrial Hygiene

PhD Applicants:

  • PhD applicants are expected to have a master’s degree.

Health Policy and Administration

MPH and MS Applicants:

  • Applicants are usually established health professionals or recent graduates with majors in appropriate biological, physical, or social sciences.

MS CTS Applicants:
Applicants must have a post-baccalaureate graduate or professional degree at the doctoral level OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian school with concurrent enrollment in clinical degree program.

PhD Applicants:

  • PhD applicants are expected to have a master’s degree and show evidence of research experience and/or research potential.
