Are
there any statistics on the number of women aged 50 years
and older who have HIV or AIDS?
Cumulatively,
as of December 2003, there have been 69,719 AIDS diagnoses
in men aged 50 years and older, and 12,092 AIDS diagnoses
in women aged 50 and older.
Heterosexual
contact is the main exposure route for women and girls of
all ages, including older adults. In 1999, 45.2%
of new diagnoses in women aged 60 years or older were due to
heterosexual contact.
Can someone be HIV positive and still look and feel healthy?
Yes, people can be infected with HIV and still look and feel fine. It may take
years for someone with the virus to develop symptoms. Even though they don't
feel sick, people with HIV can still infect others through sharing needles or
having unprotected sex.
