Welcome to the website for Chatting About AIDS and Aging, an online educational and prevention program for older adults developed at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Photo of an older couple.

Are Older People At Risk for HIV?

Many people think that HIV/AIDS affects only young people.
This isn't true. Everyone is at risk, including middle-aged and older Americans.

Through June 2001, 86,875 Americans aged 50 and over have been diagnosed with AIDS. It is estimated that between 60,000 and 125,000 persons over age 50 may have HIV, many of whom are unaware that they have the virus.

Too often, this age group is overlooked in educational and prevention efforts. The purpose of this website is to provide a wide range of information on how to assess your risk for HIV, how to prevent transmission, how to talk with your doctor about HIV/AIDS, and where to find assistance with your questions.
