OHRC Pediatric Oral Health Online Training
Improved oral health management for children and infants is a national
public health priority. With financial support from the Maternal and
Child Health Bureau, CADE and the National Maternal and Child Oral Health
Resource Center (OHRC) at Georgetown University collaborated on the development
of two web-based training (WBT) curricula promoting pediatric oral health
management to health professionals.
Development of the online curricula was driven by a blend of technological
and pedagogical considerations. OHRC applied its subject matter
expertise to identify and rework materials into content appropriate for
self-paced, self-contained WBT. CADE transformed this content for internet
delivery by drawing upon instructional design principles, adult learning
theory and eLearning usability strategies.
From the beginning, the project’s creative dimensions were designed
to accommodate the diverse target audience of health professionals
and their multiple learning styles. This included the
appropriate incorporation of rich features and controlled knowledge
pathways. The modules combine text, graphics, illustrations,
multimedia, self-assessment and evaluation within an appealing,
user-friendly interface. CADE carefully balanced the aesthetic
and operational aspects of the site with its educational objectives.
The result is an online learning environment geared to the educational
interests and needs of the thousands of diverse learners that access
the modules every year.
