IPHS 409 – Global Public Health I (3 sh)
This course takes an ecological approach to public health to provide a broad overview of current health problems around the world, with an emphasis on low income countries. Open to all SPH students. Instructor approval required for students outside of SPH.
IPHS 410 – Global Public Health II (3 sh)
This course utilizes readings and case studies of successful health interventions in the developing world to orient students to the field of global public health. Open to all SPH students. Instructor approval required for students outside of SPH.
IPHS 415 – Foundations in Anthropology and Global Health I (4 sh)
Same as ANTH 415. Explores the field of cultural medical anthropology and provides a theoretical foundation allowing for understanding and exploration of anthropology’s role in international health. Prerequisite: consent of the instructor.
IPHS 416 – Foundations in Anthropology and Global Health II (4 sh)
Same as ANTH 416. Provides an evolutionary and biocultural approach to human biology, physiology, health and disease. Prerequisite: consent of the instructor.

IPHS 501 - Public
Health Leadership Seminar I (4 sh)
Doctoral
seminar in advanced public health leadership topics,
primarily for DrPH degree students. Prerequisites: Enrollment

Health Leadership Seminar II (4 sh)
Doctoral
seminar in advanced public health leadership topics,

IPHS 503 - Public Health Integrative Seminar I (4 sh)
Doctoral seminar in advanced public health leadership topics with emphasis on methodological skills; primarily for DrPH degree students. Prerequisite: IPHS 502 and EPID 403 and BSTT 401; or consent of the instructor.
IPHS 516 - Anthropology and Global Health Integrative Seminar (4 sh)
Same as ANTH 516. Critical examination of global health issues from social science and public health perspectives. Includes consideration of cultural underpinnings, geo-political influences, design of appropriate and effective interventions, and policy formation. Prerequisite: graduate standing: and consent of the instructor.
IPHS 530 - Practicum
in Mental Health Diagnosis (4 to 8 sh)
Review
of mental health diagnostic process. Students in psychosocial
epidemiology participate with medical students in a
psychiatry clerkship. Prerequisites: CHSC 460 and consent
of the instructor.
IPHS 591 - Readings in Anthropology and Global Health (1 to 8 sh)
Same as ANTH 591. May be repeated up to 2 times. Student along with his/her advisor will develop a series of readings focused on a specific topic of interest to the student. Prerequisite: graduate or professional standing; and consent of the instructor.
IPHS 592 - Research in Anthropology and Global Health (1 to 8 sh)
Same as ANTH 592. May be repeated for a maximum of 8 hours of credit. A research and methods class combined with practical fieldwork in Anthropology and Global Health. Prerequisite: graduate standing; and consent of the instructor.

public health problems; independent study under close
supervision of faculty. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor
who has supervised at least one course in the area of
the independent study.
IPHS 597 - Practical Training in Public Health Sciences (1 to 3 sh)
May be repeated for credit. Practical training in public health within industry, governmental agency, or other relevant entity for MS and PhD students. Prerequisite: Completion of full year of academic study. International students must obtain OIS clearance. Prerequisite: Completion of the first year of the program; and approval of the department. International students must obtain clearance from the Office of International Services to register for this course.
IPHS 598 - Research
in Public Health Sciences-MS (0 to 16 sh)

grade only. Individual research in public health directed
by a faculty member. Directed toward the thesis requirements
for the Master of Science degree. Prerequisite: Consent
of the instructor.

and Local Public Health Systems (3 sh)
Overview
of state and local health department systems with site
visits and discussion of agency problems; emphasis on
Illinois agencies. Prerequisite: Minimum of 6 semester
hours in MPH core courses.
IPHS 650 - Field
Experience in Public Health (1 to 5 sh)
Preceptor-guided
field experience in public health practice through an
association or public health-oriented community program
for students in the MPH. Prerequisite: All course requirements
should be completed for the MPH.
IPHS 660 - Doctoral
Integrative Seminar (1 sh)
Integration
of the concepts and methods of biostatistics and epidemiology
into other substantive areas of public health using
a case study approach. Prerequisites: BSTT 401 and EPID
401.
IPHS 661 - DrPH
Internship in Public Health (0 to 16 sh)
One-year
internship for DrPH students; practical experience under
supervision in a public health agency; requires written
thesis, examination, and oral presentation of the findings.
Prerequisite: Approval by DrPH Doctoral Committee.
IPHS 698 - MPH Capstone
Experience (1 sh)
Individual
project in public health directed toward the MPH capstone
experience which is required for the degree. Satisfactory/unsatisfactory
grade only.
IPHS 699 - Research
in Public Health Sciences-DrPH (0 to 16 sh)
Individual
research in public health directed by a faculty member;
directed toward the thesis for the Doctor of Public
Health. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
