Programs
for Undergraduate Degree Students, Regardless of Majors The UIC School of Public Health has participated in the State of Illinois Urban Health Program for the past three decades. The stated goal of hte Urban Health Program is to increase the number of minorities entering the health professions. Beginning in the early 1990s, the Urban Health Program at the School of Public Health sought additional funding in order to attract minority and disadvantaged individuals to careers in public health. Five years ago, we secured additonal funidng to form a comprehensive Pipeline to Health Careers. Operated as a partnership with the Chicago Public Schools, this office actively worked in 20 schools, offering a variety of programs to stimulate interest in the health professions and support the academic competitiveness to complete the necessary educaitonal preparation. We are sad to report that, due to the funding priorities in the Bush Administration, we have been forced to put many of our programs on hiatus. We have been very fortunate to secure some funding from the State of Illinois, especially from Rep. Cynthia Soto (D-4) for programs in her district and from the Illinois Board of Higher Education to support many of our efforts. This website includes a full description of all of our pipeline programs. However, as you click on many of the links, you will find that individual components have been discontinued due to this funding crisis. The Urban Health and Diversity Program staff is hard at work to secure new funding and, as funds become available, these programs will be offered. The University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health provides one of the best graduate/professional education in public health. Yet, it is one of the least expensive of all accredited schools of public health. The tuition of almost all (100%) students that take eight semesters or more in a semester is waived, plus they receive a monthly stipend of a minimum of $550.00, depending on their research involvement through Research Assistantships. Additionally, a student that receives a tuition waiver for spring automatically receives a tuition waiver for the subsequent summer if he or she takes a minimum of three semester hours during summer. The goal of the UICSPH Office of Urban Health and Diversity Programs is to enhance the admission, retention, and graduation of students from multicultural backgrounds whose ethnicities are underrepresented in health professions. We have a long track record of developing and maintaining programs for students - including working professionals - interested in public health careers at the masters and doctoral levels. As of September, 1, 2006, federal budget cuts have forced us to shut down many of our programs. Office staff is directing its efforts towards securing new funding and, as that funding becomes available, programs will be resumed. Please check back for funding and program updates. We currently offer the following programs designed for students and working professionals interested in health professions education:
These programs have been suspended due to funding limitations:

Paid eight-ten week Summer Residential Enrichment Program (SREP) for college juniors and seniors
