1. Bi-Annual
Diversity Conference: College/Post Baccalaureate Recruitment
Every year, we hold two all-day conferences (one in October during Latino/Native
American Heritage Month and one in February during African-American
History Month) for the purpose of disseminating information to 100 (50
per conference) prospective disadvantaged college students and post
baccalaureate disadvantaged individuals on how to: access educational
and professional opportunities in public health and address public health
issues facing disadvantaged minorities, address cultural competence
in public health, join the public health work force. Furthermore, our
students learn about profiles of minorities who have pursued careers
in public health and meet current public health students, faculty, and
alumni. It is hoped that a minimum of 60 percent of these students will
apply for additional public health exposure opportunities and apply
for admission to a school of public health.
2. College Recruitment
Annually, we identify undergraduate students from disadvantaged communities
throughout the state of Illinois who are interested in pursuing a health
career and provide them with information, support services, and exposure
that will increase their competitiveness. If your undergraduate college
is interested in our conducting campus visitation for recruiting, please
contact:
3. Pre-Admission/Pre-Application
Program (PAAP): Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
In order to facilitate the entry and increase the competitiveness of
disadvantaged undergraduate juniors and seniors into the UIC SPH, we
work toward development of greater proficiency in standardized test-taking,
professional school application preparation, interview techniques and
introduction to research. Our goal is for students to show a cumulative
increase of 20 percent in the combined verbal and quantitative scores
of the GRE, have on-time application completion, and develop aptitude
for research. The GRE is offered at no cost to applicants to UIC SPH.
However, students pay $320 cost for materials and GRE tests. Participants
are registered in groups by UIC SPH and are expected to take the test
together, if possible.
